Make time for passion projects (just because)
When I started adjuncting over a decade ago it was simply because I was passionate about teaching and inspiring students (you know what they say, do what you love and the money will follow). But I don’t believe passions necessarily need to make money. For instance, I have a cheesy dream of writing holiday novels as an old lady (everyone I know already knows this!), and it has nothing to do with money, it’s just something that I think would be really (embarrassingly) enjoyable for me. And more recently I made huge abstract paintings for our formal living space, partly out of necessity but also because I hadn’t painted in years and it felt really amazing.
The book Unicorn Space by __ is a great example of making time for your passions just because it lights you up. Somewhere during the years (maybe after I had kids), I started feeling like if I wanted to spend time on a passion I had to:
1. Go all in and dedicate a massive amount of time (I loved doing this, but it wasn’t always practical) and
2. It had to have an end goal of making money (because, in my mind, if it didn’t then I was just wasting time when I could be doing something for my family).
I think most adults eventually feel this way. Somewhere along the way we forget to have our own unique version of fun just for the sake of it, without caring what other people think and without believing there has to be some important purpose behind it.
The book Unicorn Space was a great reset to remind me to just set aside time for passions and passion projects because being creative and simply having fun is good for all of us. Even in tiny little chunks, setting aside time for a little more fun in life is purely good for the soul.
Happy living.
